Valentina Brostean is a Barcelona-based artist of Serbian origin whose work explores identity, emotional transformation, and personal mythology. From her early days in Eastern Europe to her vibrant life in Spain, her artistic journey translates a deeply personal, subconscious world onto canvas.

Breaking the Mold: From Commercial Design to Pure Expression

Born and raised in Novi Sad, Serbia, Brostean initially followed a pragmatic path, studying graphic design and completing a master's degree in illustration. She thought graphic design would be a secure way to make a living. But the restrictive, commercial nature of the industry soon clashed with her passionate, explosive personality. Realising she did not want to be just a "part of the system," she turned to fine art as a vital outlet for her rich inner emotional world.

A Tapestry of Geographies

Brostean's life has been defined by movement. After meeting her husband, she relocated to Italy in 2010, where she lived for eleven years before making a spontaneous move to Barcelona during the uncertain days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each geographical shift has added a distinct layer to her style. Brostean acknowledges that her Serbian background brings a touch of expressive darkness to her work — a trait she sees as characteristic of Eastern European culture. Yet her recent years in Barcelona have introduced a contrasting warmth. The Mediterranean landscape — the sea, the sky, and the buzzing energy of the city — has infused her canvases with vibrant shades of blue, the yellow of the sun, and earthy sand colours.

The Alchemical Process and Found Treasures

For Brostean, the true joy of art lies not in the finished piece but in the thrilling challenge of the blank canvas. She describes her creative workflow as an "alchemical process," starting from nothing and gradually uncovering the direction of the piece — leaving her completely drained, yet eager to begin again the moment it is done.

Her move to Barcelona also sparked a love for mixed media and found objects. Recognising the hidden value in abandoned items on the streets, she began transforming discarded vases and suitcases into art, birthing new series built entirely around the ideas of movement and life's transformative journey.

Personal Mythologies and Liminal Spaces

Brostean's figurative works do not attempt to capture literal reality; instead they serve as a quest to question the world, human emotions, and identity. Her paintings frequently feature strong feminine characters, which she admits are often representations of herself navigating different situations.

These women are often accompanied by fascinating humanoids — creatures that exist in a liminal space bridging human and animal traits, born from her deep love for animals and her subconscious mind. Rather than pulling from classical tales, Brostean invents her own personal mythology and archetypes to make sense of the world around her.

A Sanctuary of Protectors

Brostean has organically transformed her living space into what feels like a vibrant "house museum," adorning her high walls with her creations. While some might find being surrounded by so many painted eyes overwhelming, she views her artworks as friends and sacred protectors. "It's my little sanctuary," she explains. "It's just an extension of who I am."

Wounds — A vulnerable piece capturing the painful, inevitable transition of an inner child growing into a woman. The emotional hurts sustained throughout life are rendered as little red stripes. Hidden within it is "Shadow," a rabbit that acts as a guardian — the intimate internal force that keeps her balanced and sane.

The Conversation Between Past, Present, and Future — A visual love story with Brostean at the centre as the "present," flanked by the experiences of her past and by a character representing her husband, who embodies her future.

Embracing the Unknown

When asked about her ultimate dreams, Brostean's answer is as organic as her art. She doesn't cling to rigid, predetermined destinations; she prefers the element of surprise. By embracing the unpredictable path, she enjoys the journey as it unfolds — driven by the need to keep creating, exploring, and sharing her alchemical world.
