Writing has the widest gap of any discipline here between practice and income. Advances outside the top of the market have shrunk, so most working writers combine publication with teaching, editing, translation or an unrelated job. Small presses now publish a large share of the poetry and short fiction that actually gets read, and live readings have returned as both an audience and a revenue line. Translation, long treated as service work, is increasingly credited and paid as authorship.

Long-form text is a first class format on this site, not an attachment, so a piece of writing gets the same page treatment a painting does. Recordings sit alongside where the writer uploaded them, which is how a lot of poetry actually wants to arrive: on the page and read aloud at once.
