Painting is one of the few disciplines where the working method has barely changed and the economics have changed completely. Stretcher bars, ground and pigment behave as they always did, but studio rent is now the largest line in most painters' costs, and the shows that once sold a year's work have thinned. Most working painters sell directly as well as through galleries, teach alongside their practice, or take commissions, and the balance between those three shapes a career more than style does.

Whoever turns up in the first row usually has work in the second and a date in the third, and it is the same person tying all of it together: the artist page, the piece and the day are each posted by whoever signs them. None of it sits behind a login, so a name can be followed from a thumbnail through to the studio address.
