Iván Pérez (Spain, 1983), is a choreographer and director based in the Netherlands. His work has been described as powerful, intimate, intense and magical.

In his work Iván is constantly examining the intricacies of the human body and its relational nature. Stirred by a chain of personal events which confronted him with death in an early phase of his life, he was faced with himself and with the way we impact the life of others through our encounters. Since he started developing his own work in 2011 he has been deepening a research into the body´s potential to redefine itself through movement and the infinite possibilities of interaction with its environment. Through different collaborations with other artists and dance companies, he has developed an eclectic body of work, which moves from intimate duet or trio work to big scale dance-theater productions, dance for film and site-specific work. He´s interested in exploring the potentialities beyond, to do this he collaborates with filmmakers and theater directors expanding his perceptions of performing arts which INNE is the new platform for.

Iván has formerly danced with the Netherlands Dance Theater (NDT) and IT Dansa and received his degree in Choreography from the University Rey Juan Carlos. He has received recognition as a performer winning the award for ‘Best Interpretation’ during the ‘International Choreography Competition’ New York-Burgos and was nominated for the ‘Swan best dancer’ for his role in Indigo Rose by Jiří Kylián. His choreography won the third prize at the XIX Choreographic Competition of Madrid, first prize Young Creator Competition in Madrid and first prize at the II International Choreography Competition Burgos-New York. In 2010 he received the award “Revelation Artist” by Cultura Viva Foundation in Madrid.

Since 2011 Iván fully committed himself to his career as a choreographer. Next to his work as associate choreographer with the Dutch production house Korzo, Iván has successfully set and made new work for companies such as the NDT, Compañía Nacional de Danza, Balletboyz London, Ballet Moscow, Dance Forum Taipei, ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble, and Leipzig Ballet. His works have toured in the Netherlands and in international festivals and they have been shown at venues like the prestigious Sadler´s Well Theater in London, the National Theater of Taipei and the Auditorium Theater of Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Besides his engagement as an associate choreographer with Korzo, he has been appointed associate choreographer with ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble for the period 2016-2018.  Recently, Iván has been invited by director Grzgegorz Bral to be the curator of Brave Festival 2018 in Wroclaw. The work he created at Dance Forum Taipei with director Josh Amstrong in the creation of Hui, which premiered at the National Theatre of Taipei, will tour in the Netherlands in March 2017. Recently he has been invited by filmmaker Ramón Gieling to work on a new film.

Iván and Joriene are part of the European project Pivot Dance: a three-year program for choreographers, producers and audiences which stimulate and enables conversation about the creation of new dance work. It takes place simultaneously in three European dance houses (The Place, Nederlandse Dansdagen and Comune di Bassano del Grappa) and is funded with the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

In collaboration with Hannah Shakti Bhuler, Iván develops a methodology of movement and education through movement-research workshops and a reflective practice. Read more about their first Choreographic Toolbox.
