Isabelle Mattei

French contemporary abstract painter based in Marseille.

My work explores the relationship between light, matter, memory and inner landscapes. I mainly work with acrylic on canvas, building each painting through successive layers, transparency, erasure, gesture and reworking.

I do not begin with a fixed image. Forms, spaces or presences may gradually emerge during the process, sometimes suggesting landscapes or fragments of the visible world, but without imposing a single interpretation. What interests me is precisely this unstable space where abstraction remains open to perception, emotion and the imagination of each viewer.

Light plays a central role in my work. It often appears from within the material itself, creating depth, tension and a sense of emergence.

Alongside my paintings, I also create unique small-format original art cards in A5, A4 and A3 formats. Each one is hand-painted, signed and one of a kind, offering a more accessible entry into my pictorial universe.
