Normophobia - Paintings

My work lives in the tension between presence and absence, voice and silence, body and void. Through textured, animal-like figures trapped within flat, empty backgrounds, I explore a space where communication struggles to exist and meaning resists fixation. These figures are not animals in the conventional sense — they are ambiguous, hybrid beings caught between instinct and expression, desire and pain, speaking in a language of gestures without words. Their flesh is a living, reactive surface, created through unpredictable chemical processes that mirror the volatile emotions simmering beneath their skin. Each texture is a unique, unrepeatable moment of inner life — a chemical conversation trapped within an unresponsive, alien stage. This contrast between the richly textured figures and the silent, flat backgrounds evokes the tradition of Iranian miniature painting, where positive and negative spaces engage in a silent symphony of pressure and stillness. My work echoes this dialogue, creating a visual language where the silence around the figures is both a void and a space of intense emotional resonance. As an Oriental woman looking through both Oriental and Occidental lenses, my art embodies a border-crossing perspective — a voice caught between histories, cultures, and bodies. It reflects the fractures and dialogues between what is seen and what remains unspoken, the struggle to express identity and feeling within a world that often refuses to listen. My work is a space of liminality and resistance — where the rawness of instinct meets the coldness of displacement, and where the desire to communicate is met with silence. It is a meditation on the human condition, on alienation, and on the fragile, volatile life that persists within us all.
